Balancing – Is It Something We Can Actually Achieve?

Updated: Mar 21

A wise young client once told me that she viewed balance not as something to find, but as balancing—an ongoing, active process. It happens every day. You don’t simply reach the finish line of a balanced life. Instead, the hope is that when we reach the finish line of life, we can look back and see that we embraced balance throughout. But in the messy middle, it’s a daily, hard-fought effort to maintain, foster, and support the constant act of balancing that we all need.

How Can We Strengthen Our Capacity for Balancing? I like to explore a mind, body, and spirit approach to balancing.

  • Mind: How are you challenging your intellect? Are you regularly engaging your brain to learn, discover, and create? Intellectual growth is a vital part of maintaining balance.

  • Body: This area often gets the most attention—and for good reason. There are countless ways to support physical balance: nutrition, exercise, and tracking health metrics such as cholesterol, blood pressure, and weight.

  • Spirit: Spiritual balance is frequently overlooked in today’s fast-paced, hustle-driven world. Because religion and politics are often considered off-limits in conversation, we sometimes neglect spiritual health altogether. However, this can leave people feeling disconnected or ungrounded. Nourishing your spiritual side—whether through reflection, meditation, time in nature, or connecting with a higher purpose—requires patience, self-compassion, and love. It’s an investment of time and attention that is well worth making.

Practical Tips for Balancing:

  • Seek support from a trusted friend, mentor, or professional.

  • Rest when you need it—without guilt.

  • Regularly check in with yourself. Take inventory of your values and goals, and assess whether your current schedule aligns with them.

  • Consider reaching out to a nurse coach for support. A nurse coach can help you cultivate sustainable habits, strengthen your capacity for balancing, and empower you to thrive—mind, body, and spirit.
